Strabismus also called Squint is an eye condition where the eyes do not look in the same direction as each other.
This means that while one eye looks forwards to focus on an object, the other eye turns either inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards.
The eyes do not work together as a pair all the time. The misalignment can shift from one eye to the other. To line up and focus both eyes on a single target, all muscles in both eyes must be balanced and working together.
The brain controls these muscles. Patients who have strabismus usually have a problem that can affect eye muscles
Most squints occur in young children. Sometimes when a child has a squint, the sight in the eye which turns may be weaker (this is called a “lazy eye”).
Squints can also develop in adults but for different reasons to young children, such as:
Most adults with strabismus have had it since they were children. But sometimes it starts later in life.
Stabismologists have extensive knowledge to diagnose and manage all kinds of strabismus cases in children and adults with appropriate clinical and surgical means.
