Common eye diseases and problems

Amblyopia/Lazy eye:- Amblyopia is the medical term for lazy eye. It is a problem with vision where the eye and brain do not work together properly. The brain favours one eye over the other and the weak eye does not move or focus correctly. Amblyopia is the most common cause of sight problems in children, but it can occur in adults as well. There are several types of amblyopia and many ways to attempt to improve your vision using eye exercises.

Signs and symptoms of amblyopia include:

  • A wandering eye or an eye that does not move well with the other
  • Bumping into things
  • Poor depth perception
  • Squinting or tilting the head
  • Blurry Vision
  • Double vision
  • Covering or shutting one eye
  • Headache
  • Eye strain

Squint: Strabismus is the technical term for misaligned eyes also known as “squint.” In children strabismus can interrupt the development of normal binocular vision, and can cause a cosmetic defect that may affect their social development. In adults strabismus may cause a cosmetic defect also but strabismus acquired in late childhood or adulthood often causes double vision.

Causes of Squint/Strabismus :-Most childhood squint is caused by a failure of development of normal eye movement control, and the underlying problems are still not fully understood. Squint can also be caused by problems with the nerves controlling the muscles that move the eye (eg oculomotor nerve paresis, Duane Retraction Syndrome), or by diseases that affect the extra-ocular muscles themselves (eg thyroid disease). Some kinds of strabismus can be treated with glasses, and some kinds do not require treatment, but most forms of strabismus will not improve without surgery. A majority of patients are able to be managed with a single operation, but some patients require more than one procedure.

Dry Eye Syndrome :-We often forget to take a quick break from our computer and mobile devices throughout the day causing a great deal of eye strain. Focusing on a screen for extended periods of time without rest leads to eye dryness and can damage the eyes if unmanaged. People who use computers and other digital screens tend to blink less. Blinking lubricates the surface of the eye and keeps our vision intact throughout the day. With a few simple lifestyle changes and a general awareness of the damage that can be done to your eyes when engaging in daily work activities, we can gear ourselves for better optical well-being. However, if eye problems persist after making the necessary changes, you should seek medical attention to rule out serious conditions.

Dry Eye symptoms include:-

  • burning, stinging or itchy eyes
  • blurred vision
  • red eyes
  • string mucus around the eyes
  • painful to wear contact lenses
  • constant tearing

If left untreated, dry eye can lead to eye infections, eye inflammation, corneal abrasions, and vision loss.

Blepharitis: Blepharitis is the inflammation of the eyelids and commonly occurs when the eyes become red, greasy, crusted, and itchy. Everyone has bacteria on their skin, but some have excess causing Blepharitis. It is essential to keep your eyelids, skin, and hair clean to reduce the chances of contracting Blepharitis. When you notice scale-like dandruff on your inner eyelid consult an Ophthalmologist. Unfortunately you cannot cure Blepharitis but there are numerous ways to keep this eye condition under control.
